VENUS MAKES SWIFT WORK OF MERTENS TO ROLL BACK THE YEARS AGAIN

Muguruza advances to 4th round of French Open

Defending champion, Garbine Muguruza, had to dig deep to defeat Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan to advance to the fourth round of the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros in Paris.

Muguruza relied on her experience against the 22-year-old youngster who was eager to cause an upset in a draw very thin on star players.

With
Serena Williams pregnant, Maria Sharapova denied an invitation and world number one Angelique Kerber knocked out in the first round, there's not much left to look forward to in the women's draw.

It therefore came as a relief when Muguruza pulled through against the 22-year-old.

It wasn't a walk in the park for the Spaniard. Her court craft wasn't pretty or effective in the first set and she had to rely on sheer power to win the opening set 7-5.

She turned up the heat and the noise in the second set and eventually booked her place in the next round with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

There were no such problems for nine time champion Rafael Nadal.

The fourth seeded Spaniard pummeled Georgia's world number 53 Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-love, 6-1, 6-love.

The unforced errors rolled off the Georgian's racket -- 34 in total -- making it so much easier for Nadal.

In one of the biggest upsets of the day, 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov was beaten by Pablo Carreno Busta.

It's the first time Busta advanced to the last 16 at a Grand Slam event.

The Spaniard broke new ground with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Bulgarian.
