More than 12 years has passed since Luis Garcia's infamous 'ghost goal' but former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen seemingly still feels a sense of injustice over his side's controversial Champions League defeat at Anfield.
After drawing 0-0 in a
semi-final first-leg at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool ground out a 1-0 win in the
reverse leg to advance to the 2005 Champions League final, which they
eventually won with a memorable penalty shootout victory over AC Milan.
Garcia scored the only
goal across the two semi-final legs - a scrambled effort which was awarded by
referee Lubos Michel despite William Gallas' attempts to clear the ball
off the line
The controversial goal
has divided opinion ever since and Gudjohnsen appears to still hold a
slight grudge after bringing up the topic at Michael Carrick's testimonial at
Old Trafford on Sunday.
After playing alongside
Garcia and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, Gudjohnsen took to social
media to post a video of himself questioning the legitimacy of the goal while
on the team bus with the pair.
Interrupting a
conversation between Carragher and Garcia, Gudjohnsen said: 'I know, I know -
it never crossed the line. It never crossed the line - I know that's what your
talking about!'
He then uploaded the video alongside the caption: '12 years on and they still can't believe they got away with that 'goal'.'
Garcia and Carragher
appeared to take the joke well, especially the Sportsmail columnist,
who shouted back: 'Ghost goal!'.
All three featured for
the visiting 'Michael Carrick All-Stars' at Old Trafford on Sunday as they drew
2-2 against a side comprised of current and former Manchester United players.
