Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol
believes Alvaro Morata is a better striker than Man United-bound Romelu Lukaku
Steve
Nicol has admitted that he would take Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata over
Everton forward Romelu Lukaku.
The Premier League champions
appeared set to re-sign Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window as
Manchester United pursued the Spanish star.
However, in a surprise turn of
events, Jose Mourinho is now poised to reunite with Lukaku as the Red Devils
close in on a £75m deal to sign the Belgium international despite interest from
Chelsea.
While the Blues boss will
naturally be frustrated to miss out on what has been billed as his top summer
target, reports suggest
the Chelsea manager could turn his attention to Morata.
While Nicol admits Lukaku has
some attributes that Morata is lacking, the former Liverpool defender says he
would still prefer the Real Madrid striker given his natural ability.
“There
are couple of things that Lukaku has that Morata: power and strength. I’ll have
a football player over that every day,” Nicol told Reporters
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36
games in the Premier League to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry
Kane in the race to secure the golden boot.
Morata, meanwhile, netted 15
times in 26 games in La Liga but spent most of the season being used as an
impact substitute despite return to the Spanish capital in a £29m deal from
Serie A giants Juventus last summer.
