THE RECORD MOHAMMED SALAH COULD SET WITH A GOAL AGAINST LEEDS UNITED

Liverpool take on Leeds

In the sole game of Sunday afternoon, Liverpool travel to Elland Road to take out Leeds United. The Reds have taken seven points from their opening three encounters this season, having swept aside Burnley and Norwich before being held to a 1-1 draw against 10 man Chelsea.

Although they will feel they probably should have beaten the London side at Anfield given their man advantage for half of the game, they remain unbeaten, and will look to extend this against a Leeds United side that are yet to win this season and sit one place above the relegation zone.

A win by more than three goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side would take them top of the table by virtue of goal difference, but there is added incentive for a certain winger to find the back of the net.

What would a goal mean?

Were Mohammed Salah to net in Liverpool’s encounter with Leeds United this afternoon, he would become the fifth fastest man to reach 100 goals in Premier League history. The prolific wide man currently has 99 in his 161 appearances in the league, including 2 in 13 for Chelsea, his former club.

Salah would enter the ranks behind four out and out strikers, and four of the greatest in Premier League history, in the forms of Alan Shearer (100 in 124 games), Harry Kane (141 appearances), Sergio Aguero (147 appearances) and Thierry Henry (160 appearances).

It is impressive company, and even more so when you consider the fact that Salah is a winger by trade, something that makes the feat even more astonishing. Now 29 years old, how many more years at the top does the Egyptian have, and how do Liverpool even begin trying to replace him when his time to depart does come?

‘WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE’: JURGEN KLOPP SAYS 29-YEAR-OLD WON’T BE PLAYING AGAINST LEEDS UNITED

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Roberto Firmino will not be available for selection against Leeds United this weekend.

Liverpool head into this game with a number of injury issues. Takumi Minamino and Harvey Elliott both picked up problems while on international duty and will have to be assessed, while Firmino is out of action.

Klopp was of course asked about the debacle surrounding the Reds’ Brazilian players this weekend, and while Alisson and Fabinho have now been cleared to play, Firmino is out with an injury.

WHAT’S BEEN SAID?

Klopp gave an update on Firmino and the other Brazilians in his squad.

“Bobby will not be available because of injury. It’s a really tricky situation. We shouldn’t forget the players wanted to play these games (for Brazil) and clubs wanted to let them go but it just was not possible,” Klopp said.

JOTA TO START

Luckily, this isn’t as big a blow as it would have been a few years ago for Liverpool.

Indeed, Diogo Jota’s arrival last summer means the Brazilian is no longer the Reds’ only quality option as a centre-forward, and we’d expect the Portuguese ace to start at Elland Road.

Jota has had a fine start to the season, netting two goals in three games, and against a Leeds team that leaves a lot of space at the back, he could get a lot of joy.

Firmino will undoubtedly be a miss, but it won’t be the biggest blow the Reds could receive at this time.

FIFA Backs Down On Threat To Fine Premier League Clubs

FIFA will allow Premier League players from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay to compete this weekend after those countries agreed to waive a five-day travel restriction period, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City were among clubs who did not release Brazilian players for the current international break due to them having to travel to COVID-19 “red list” countries.

Sources this week said Premier League clubs could face sanctions from FIFA if they played South American players, who were not released for international duty, in this weekend’s games.

But after extensive talks over the past 24 hours between FIFA and the relevant associations, a deal was reached that cleared the way for the players to compete without the risk of the clubs being sanctioned, the source told Reuters.

FIFA, the English FA and Premier League are working closely together to find a solution with the UK government over red-list quarantine restrictions in the October international window, the source added.

FIFA had waived its normal regulations on international call-ups during the COVID-19 pandemic but did not extend that waiver to cover the current games.

Cristiano Ronaldo to break Premier League record on return

Cristiano Ronaldo will break the record for the longest gap between Premier League appearances when he makes his second Manchester United debut against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed during Friday's pre-match press conference that the Portugal international will make his second debut for the club against the Magpies.

Solskjaer has not revealed whether Ronaldo will start, but the highest international goalscorer of all time will break the record for the longest gap between Premier League outings when he takes to the field.

It has been 12 years and 118 days since his last match in the top flight against Arsenal in May 2009, with the 36-year-old leaving Man United that summer to join Real Madrid.

The attacker has scored 392 goals in 390 league appearances for Real Madrid and Juventus since securing a move away from Old Trafford.

The Portuguese found the back of the net on 118 occasions in 292 outings for Man United between 2003 and 2009, and he has re-signed for the 20-time English champions on an initial two-year contract.

Thomas Tuchel confirms triple injury blow ahead of Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa

Thomas Tuchel confirmed he will be without a trio of first team regulars on Saturday.

The German issued an update surrounding the fitness of a number of his key players as the Blues look to conintue their impressive start to the season, Tuchel's side yet to taste defeat

Thomas Tuchel'sChelsea will have to take on Aston Villa without three first-team regulars after N'Golo KanteChristian Pulisic and Reece James are all set to miss out.

The Blues welcome Dean Smith's side to Stamford Bridge for the Saturday evening kick-off, aiming to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the table after three games played, boasting two wins and a draw, though the draw may be the most impressive performance of the trio given it came away at Anfield where they were forced to play the majority of the contest with ten men after James' first-half red card.

The German tactician has explaining who will miss the next league outing, revealing the recent international break has done more harm than good for Pulisic, while Kante is still carrying a knock from the Liverpool game.

"Today was the first day with everyone back. Unfortunately, we have N'Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic out.

"They both got back injured. N'Golo more from the Liverpool game and we will try for Tuesday. Christian came back on crutches, he has an ankle injury with about 10 days [out]."Pulisic appeared to sustain a nasty looking ankle injury during the USA's 4-1 win over Honduras, but tried to play through the pain barrier before he could no longer continue just after the hour mark.

James will serve the first game of his suspension following his straight red card against Liverpool.

However, there was at least some positive news for the Stamford Bridge faithful, as Tuchel confirmed £97m man Romelu Lukaku is fit to play after he aggravated a thigh injury while away on international duty with Belgium.

The Blues boss said: "He came back two days ago. He trained yesterday and today no problem at all", before placing a timeline on Kante's recovery, "N'Golo will try for Tuesday. That's looks good."

N'Golo Kante ahd Christian Pulisic are both ruled out of Chelsea's clash against Aston Villa

Chelsea are currently unaware as to whether Thiago Silva will be allowed to play, after the club refused to allow the defender to report for international duty with Brazil - much to the dismay of both FIFA and the Brazilian FA.

Saturday's visitors Villa sit eleventh on four points after a win, loss and draw - still coming to terms with life without former skipper Jack Grealish, though Smith's side have made good use of the £100m fee they received for their ex-captain.

Summer signings Leon Bailey and Danny Ings are set to feature, though Emi Buendia and first-choice shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez are expected to miss out due to quarantine rules after returning from Argentina.

FIFA release statement as Liverpool's Brazil stars set to face Leeds United

Fabinho and Alisson will be available for Sunday's Premier League clash against Leeds

Liverpool's Brazilian stars Alisson Becker and Fabinho will be able to play a part in Sunday's meeting with Leeds United at Elland Road.

They had previously been banned by FIFA after the Brazilian FA were one of a number of associations to request FIFA invoke their five-day rule, which meant the players were unavailable for this weekend's Premier League fixtures.

The requests came after Premier League clubs refused to release players for international matches that were taking place in red-list countries due to quarantine requirements upon their return.

After lengthy discussions with the governing body, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay have all agreed to waive the automatic five-day rule.

A statement from FIFA on their website reads: "Based on positive signals and constructive dialogue FIFA has received from the UK government towards the international match window in October, recognising that players have no control over the extreme situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and sanitary restrictions currently imposed and, as a sign of good faith, goodwill and cooperation, the member associations of Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay, in close consultation with FIFA, have taken the decision to withdraw their complaints in relation to the England-based players, and players bound to play in England, who were not released for the recent international matches.

"On 8 September 2021, the FIFA President, The FA Interim Chair and Premier League Chair sent a joint letter to the UK Prime Minister. The UK government is now open to find a reasonable solution with the three organisations, who are working closely together in a spirit of mutual understanding, in the interests of everyone."

With another international break in October, it's important a resolution is found that satisfies all parties and ensures player safety, in order to avoid similar conflict next month.

Roberto Firmino remains unavailable through injury after he sustained a hamstring problem in Liverpool's 1-1 draw against Chelsea two weeks ago.

Klopp spoke about the club v country row to the club website on Friday: "We all know we are in the middle of a pandemic, which is difficult for all parts of life and for football it was difficult as well.

"We have to think, ‘OK, clear, they are invited.’ But when they come back they have to quarantine [for] 10 days. Again, it’s not our decision, we didn’t say they have to quarantine [for] 10 days, we didn’t say you have to go to the national team, we can’t say nothing – we just sit in between and we think, ‘OK, what’s going on?’

“Our players, if they come back then they have to quarantine 10 days in a random hotel, next to the airport probably, which is not good for any people who have to do that but for a professional football player, being 10 days in a hotel – with the food they get from there – you lose everything. You lose muscle, you lose everything. It means 10 days in the hotel, coming back [and] needing pretty much 10 days to get on track again.

“But the whole situation is really just like the whole world in the moment in a nutshell – ‘Ah, in football they have these problems as well.’ Yes, we have these problems. And now we will see who finds the solution.”

Liverpool have a clinical £45m sensation that isn’t getting enough credit – Pep Lijnders absolutely loves him

Diogo Jota already has two goals this season and after Jurgen Klopp put him on the bench against Chelsea, he clearly isn’t getting the credit he deserves.

When the Portuguese returned to pre-season, Pep Lijnders was delighted and wrote about him in his training camp diary.

He wrote: “While I’m sitting here and writing, Diogo just shook me ‘awake’ saying hello. It’s great to see him – fresh, fit and ready. Our pressing monster just arrived! Haha!”

Liverpool signed Jota from Wolves for £45million and while injury held him back last season he can really explode into life this season.

Roberto Firmino is injured now but aside from the start against Chelsea, he seems to have given way to Jota as a starter although the fact that Klopp doesn’t trust him in big games shows he isn’t getting the credit he deserves.

He’s already got two goals in two starts this term and he scored 13 times last season despite a serious knee injury that forced him to miss 19 games.

Klopp must now put his faith in Jota to spearhead Liverpool’s attack and I have little doubt that he will be repaid. Not only can the former Wolves star provide him with the goals he needs but he also has the ability to turn under pressure which only Sadio Mane can rival.

His goal against Brighton last season was incredible as he silkily slid across the box and finished across the goal in what can only be described as a Lionel Messi-esque fashion.

Liverpool are to be without Fabinho, Alisson and Firmino vs. Leeds due to the FIFA ban but the latter would have missed the game anyway due to injury and now is Jota’s chance to once again show Klopp why he must be the first choice pick at striker this season.

I genuinely believe Jota is an outside shout for the Premier League golden boot this season but only if he gets the minutes he needs and can avoid needless injuries.

Banned Chelsea defender Thiago Silva could still face Aston Villa

The Brazilian Football Association has asked FIFA to invoke the 'five-day rule' which will ban players who did not honour an international call-up

Chelsea are said to be hopeful defender Thiago Silva will be available to face Aston Villa on Saturday, despite being hit with a FIFA ban.

The Brazilian was barred from travelling to South America for the recent World Cup qualifiers because he would have had to miss matches due to the requirement to quarantine on his return.

The Brazilian Football Association has asked FIFA to invoke the 'five-day rule' which will ban players who did not travel to their country after an international call-up.

Premier League clubs blocked Brazilian players from going to South America, although Villa allowed Argentina pair Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez to travel for their games against Venezuela and Brazil.

Silva is one of eight England-based Brazil players affected by the ruling but talks are understood to be ongoing between the Premier League clubs and FIFA to try and find a way around the issue, according to report

The FA and government are also said to be involved in discussions.

It is reported the clubs feel the situation takes no account of the unusual circumstances they have found themselves in and feel the players should be allowed to play for their clubs this weekend.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has also reportedly written to clubs to say he is trying to find a solution.
