Banned Chelsea defender Thiago Silva could still face Aston Villa

The Brazilian Football Association has asked FIFA to invoke the 'five-day rule' which will ban players who did not honour an international call-up

Chelsea are said to be hopeful defender Thiago Silva will be available to face Aston Villa on Saturday, despite being hit with a FIFA ban.

The Brazilian was barred from travelling to South America for the recent World Cup qualifiers because he would have had to miss matches due to the requirement to quarantine on his return.

The Brazilian Football Association has asked FIFA to invoke the 'five-day rule' which will ban players who did not travel to their country after an international call-up.

Premier League clubs blocked Brazilian players from going to South America, although Villa allowed Argentina pair Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez to travel for their games against Venezuela and Brazil.

Silva is one of eight England-based Brazil players affected by the ruling but talks are understood to be ongoing between the Premier League clubs and FIFA to try and find a way around the issue, according to report

The FA and government are also said to be involved in discussions.

It is reported the clubs feel the situation takes no account of the unusual circumstances they have found themselves in and feel the players should be allowed to play for their clubs this weekend.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has also reportedly written to clubs to say he is trying to find a solution.
