Liverpool have begun their
summer spending in surprising fashion by nabbing one of Chelsea’s young
starlets. Dominic Solanke is
heading to Anfield.
The
England U-20 forward is out of contract this summer and Liverpool are willing
to pay the tribunal fee, thought to be in the $3-4 million range. A tall,
strong and physical forward but also shows exceptional pace and technique.
Liverpool
are in need of forward line help. Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings have missed
most of the last two seasons with injury. That has left Divock Origi as
the only fit striker but Jurgen Klopp has often chosen Roberto Firmino to
play further forward instead.
Anfield fans will hope this transfer will resemble Daniel Sturridge’s move from
Chelsea. In 2013 the England forward was deemed surplus to requirements at
Stamford Bridge and the Blues were happy to let a struggling player move to
their rivals. Just 18 months later and Sturridge had 35 Liverpool goals to
his name as the Reds were challenging for the title once more.
There
is much debate among Liverpool to fans about what this transfer symbolizes. Is
this a smart piece of business before the spending the huge transfer kitty that
we hear about from the club? Alternatively is this another example of how the
Reds are going to target players who are cheap or playing in the Premier
League?
Criticism
of the Liverpool spending over recent summers is that they have little to
net-spend and have not longer far enough from the Premier League. Last summer’s
two most successful signing – Mane & Wijnaldum – were already plying
their trade in England.
